Getting the
job While I was still working at Sierra Highway Express, I was talking to Werner about a job. My Father-in-law was a truck driver too, and we had worked at DEF together. We wanted to get on as a team at Werner. Teams get more miles and are treated better than solo drivers. The other reason we choose Werner is because they offered day one health benefits. The day we are issued a truck, is the day the benefits start. Most companies require 90 days of employment first. |
My Job Description
This company hauled all sorts of
things, too many to mention. We got into the dry goods division. We did not pull a refer
trailer and did not have any temperature controlled products. We drove all over the states
but mostly in the East. Being based in Fontana, we thought it was odd spending all of out
time on the East coast and the mid West. While company drivers based on the East Coast
spent their time on the West Coast...
The Good Points
This was the first time I had ever
driven a Century Class Condo. We did get day one benefits.
The Bad Points
We could not make enough money. I was
sending home less money than we needed to make our basic fixed bills. We could not get
enough miles. As a team we were averaging 3,500-4,000 miles a week. I can drive that much
by myself.
We were on the other side of the country for three weeks than they would zig zag us back home for 3 days then send us back to the East Coast for another 3 weeks.
Why I Stopped Working There.
After a little while my Father-in-law
quit and I ran the truck by myself. The miles dried up even more. I could not make enough
money to support my family. I had to quit to get another job that would let me work and
make more money. I talked to everyone there at Werner, I talked to upper management. Give
me more to do, I need to work... Nobody cared. I quit.
