Getting the
job After getting laid off from the construction company, I needed a job that I could make some money but not be afraid to quit in a minute, if and when the last job would call me back to work. I told the owner of Osburn Trucking this when he
interviewed me. He wasn't going to hire any new drivers but it was the high time of the
year for him, and he did need somebody to cover a few loads until the christmas rush was
over. It seemed that I was in the right place at the right time and we helped each other
out. |
My Job Description
My job was to call in everyday at 12 noon and see if he
needed me to drive for him that day. If he did, I would drive my car to his house. He
lived on property on the West side of town, in the country. His house was in the front and
his trucks were parked out in the back. All of his drivers would meet there and he would
hand us our orders.
We would all drive up to Livingston, [75 miles] and pick up yams, or sweet potatoes. Then head down to Southern California to all of the grocery warehouses and produce houses in the markets. The appoitments for deliveries were early in the morning so we needed to drive all night and take a short nap at the customer, then unload. Then drove back to his place in Fresno, and dropped the truck and drove my car home.
The Good Points
He had very nice trucks, and
trailers. Every load I pulled for him was, one pick up, and one drop. He paid for all of
the lumpers, and I always came back to Fresno empty. It was a cool job and enjoyed working
for Mr. Osburn.
The Bad Points
There were no bad points as far as I
was concerned.
Why I Stopped Working There.
The Christmas rush was over and he laid
off some drivers. I was the last hired and was his first choice to let go, to be fair to
the other drivers. There were no hard feelings and I left with a hand shake and a thank
you.
