Letter to the President! 2000

June, 19, 2000
Dear Mr. Clinton,
I am writing in regards of this fuel situation we all are enduring.
My husband and I are an owner/operator of a small trucking company of one truck, who is leased on with a major company.
This major company does not pay for our fuel we use to haul their freight. Yes they give us what is called a comcard and my husband pays for his fuel off that.
What ever amount he pays for off that comcard, we not only have to pay it back off our settlements, but we also have to pay a 3.00 charge on all usage of this card besides.
I am unable to work and I do not drive nor am I allowed to collect disability which I have been turned down four times before, I stay home and do the book keeping etc for our small company.
This pinch on the fuel with in the last six months has really put a damper on my/our life. I am not only not being able to pay my bills, but we are loosing our home, truck, car etc. not to mention we have already lost my husband pick up truck. We were forced to file a chapter 13 which I feel will turn into a chapter 7 as well if things keep going the way they are. We only have one income and that is my husbands and out of that we have high taxes to pay, insurance of 2500.00 a month to pay, ifta, road usage tax, unemployment comp, maintenance of the trucks, and the list goes on, along with our house payment electric phone etc.
In taxes alone, I am paying a grand total of 15,500.00 a year alone and still owe the federal government a total of 1920.00 for unemployment benefits. This is for the one driver that we use to have whom we had to let go. Due to the fact we could not afford to keep him or pay him. . Our expenses for the business and our home life are $4800.00 a month, and only making a 600.00 a week check does not cover all the bills and bye food or pay for our rig of 1841.01 a month. Or my medication.
Please help us in our efforts to help get the fuel costs down so we here at home can start feeding our kids, and eating well again instead of getting sicker.
I have what is called sero negative reactive arthritis with anemia. I am supposed to be on 7 different kinds of medicines. My medicines average out to be with our insurance paying most of it a total of $49.00 a week which I can not afford to buy due to the fact my money goes to all my bills and the fuel. This medicine I need to keep me alive so I am out of pain, which I am in every day of my life until I take my medicine, which I am unable to take now. With whatever bills I can pay out of my husband’s settlement checks, there is no money left for food in the house.
I thank God each and every day that I do not have little children here to feed and cloth for I would not be able to afford it, I can barely afford to feed myself.
I have been living on soup, sandwiches, and cereal for the last year in order to make ends meet.
I am unable to bye clothing for my husband which he needs desperately while being on the road, nor can I do the things I use to do like go get a hair cut etc.
I don't go anywhere such as the movies, out to eat, etc because I can not afford it. I have been a prisoner in my own home due to lack of money. All that I AM MENTIONING IS PUTTING ME INTO A DEPRESSION AS WELL.
I thought maybe by writing this letter that you would help us in our fight against OPEC raising the fuel again so they can get rich off us. They are not thinking clearly what is going on nor do they care for us whom are living day by day with out meals, medicines, clothing etc all out of greed.
I am begging you! As I stated before you have the power to make them lower the fuel you are President of the USA. Please help us.
It seems that the US Government does not care about the trucking industry or us small folks whom are trying to make an honest mans living and living day by day.
With the fuel crisis we are barely surviving here by the skin of our teeth but the Government insists of bringing foreigners to our country the land of opportunity. Well what about our opportunity as US citizens don't we matter, don't we count?
Why haven’t you done anything to prevent this situation?
We have a saying here in the trucking business. " WITH OUT TRUCKS AMERICA STOPS...” In turn if our guys and gals on the roads stop driving, even if a law was passed the warehouse's will go empty, When they go empty you or the rest of the nation will not have food to eat, clothes on your backs, cars to drive, telephones, etc unless you plan on traveling across country to get your items your self on a weekly basis, as well as the rest of the nation.
The trucking industry has changed in the last 20 years were our people out there on the roads are kept up nice neat and clean unless they get dispatch one right after another, and are unable to make it to the showers, 98 percent of them are not the scum bags that the USA people think they are nor are their families.
How can we prevent this? You are the president of the USA and were elected in good faith, but you have let the people down so bad with Monica, and now not helping us out.
Why don't you all up there get off your duffs and do something you have the power to help us out.
In the US constitution it states " We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. " then it goes into the articles.
We the people vote as well and there are 80 million trucks on the roads along with the drivers wives, sons daughters, family nieces nephews, friends etc. Think about it 80 million that makes up for 3/4 the population of America
Sincerely yours
Debby Richardson
Wife of a trucker
