Song #2 - Just to Get By: It's a challenge to so-called Christians who are "doing enough just to get by," instead of living all-out for God like they should: You're afraid of what it takes to give it all away / doing enough just to get by, just to get by / Thinkin that you live the right life.
Song #3 - Echelon: n. A staggered formation of troops. A quick trip to the dictionary added a new word to my vocabulary as I began to understand this song. It's about fighting against the enemy with no thought of retreat: Now that it's on, we're out in the front of this marathon / With our armor on, stay strong we drive on (drive on)/ Our echelon pressin' on 'til we reach the top / And you know we don't stop (our echelon). The (drive on) and (our echelon) echoes add a nice touch to the song. I also like the line, "I'm a soldier in this army of One," a different version of the Marines or whatever's motto. This song is Pillar's second hit from this CD, and it also reached #1 on ChristianRock.net's chart.
Song #4 - Stay Up: This song features KJ-52 singing a great percentage of the vocals. It's got some of the fastest verses on this CD, and I guess it could be called rap. At some points it seems like this is another Christian hypocrite song, but I think this one is for unbelievers: You're the reason He came for and His blood poured / So behold He stands at the door and just knocks / But you be standin' at the door with the door locked.
Song #5 - Behind Closed Doors: By now, I have gotten tired of the hard rock song that just about all these songs possess. This song is hard to tell if it's challenging Christian hypocrites or challenging unbelievers, but I think the first line of the chorus makes it clear it's for Christians: You're not the same man you were before. The first verse sets it up: Open up and reveal what's goin on in the backroom...So quit livin like a hypocrite and be real.... And the second verses adds to that: Sometimes it's so easy to cheat / But the only one's you're cheatin' are just you and the Chief. A good song, except that it reminds me of some other Pillar songs I just heard.
Song #6 - Epidemic: "We're in the middle of an outbreak..." Something about everyone choosing sides. Musically, it sounds like...the rest of the CD.
Song #7 - Hindsight: This song appears to be a story about a guy's past life, but now "I've changed my ways and I just live for Him...I changed my ways I'm never goin back again / I'm never going back again"
Song #8 - Light At My Feet: Light At My Feet is rather simple compared to these heavy don't-be-a-hypocrite songs earlier on. It starts out rather slow (although just as loud), but just when you think maybe Pillar has a softer song, the chorus hits, and we're back to good ol normal hard rock. It's about following God's road by his light.
Song #9 - A Shame: This is probably one of the most direct songs about Christian hypocrites. You can't miss the message of this song: It's a shame to be ashamed / To be ashamed of the One that we should glorify.
Song #10 - Indivisible: This song is clearly about our country's motto, "In God We Trust," and how it's meaning has been lost in America. It's got some of the best lyrics in the CD: The people of the nation let me year you give a holler / In God we trust, in God we trust / We stamp it on our penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar / In God we trust, in God we trust / The other day I saw the news somebody else complaining / They want the motto takin off of the Benjamin Franklin / They got a problem with my God and that I believe in it / But they don't got a problem with the money when they spend it / They're so offended by four words that need no explanation / In GOD we trust the motto of this greatest nation / Not just a motto but something that we truly believe / If you don't like it you can pack a bag and you can leave. A song America needs to hear.
Song #11 - Further: This is called Pillar's attempt at a softer song, almost a worship song. It fits very nicely at the end of the CD just when you're all tired of the hard rock sound: And I admit when I submit to you / I can see all of the selfish things I do / I'm further, further from myself / When I'm next to you / When I run to you.
