Jeremy Camp: Stay Jeremy Camp is not lacking in talent, although there's nothing extraordinary about his first CD. He has a good voice, generally low and raw-sounding but still fine when he jumps up an octave for a note or two. His style could be described as pop/contemporary with a slight glance at rock, with guitars as the main instrument. There's not much that sounds impressive, but it's good music. Where Camp fails is in creativity and variety. Most of the songs tend to lose their individuality as they all blend in and sound the same. There is one real rock song, "Take My Life," and many come close, while the rest of the CD containts soft ballads showing little uniqueness. This problem isn't helped by the lyrical content. In fact, it only adds to it. "I don't understand what's going on, but I know you do God, and I trust you and know you're in control." That's a great truth, but Camp explores it for just about the whole CD. And it's perfectly understandable if you know any of his story, which includes losing his first wife to cancer shortly after they were married. And in one sense, it's a beautiful theme that sort of unifies the CD. But in another sense, it's boring unoriginality that only magnifies the lack of creativity in the music. Don't get me wrong. Some of the songs are well done and can relate to people. And maybe if you're going through a really hard time, one of these songs can encourage you. But twelve of them in a row, on one CD? -- Josh 4/18/2004 |
