Veggie Rocks Several Christian artists take classic VeggieTales tunes and, well, as the inside of the jacket says, "This ain't your kid brother's VeggieTales!" Three old songs; eight new ones. Some creative and fun, and a couple that just don't work. Rebecca turns the theme song into her familiar style that's heavy on guitars and strings. Steven Curtis Chapman's son shows his excellent singing voice on a guitar-fronted "I Love My Lips," although the father-son dialogue between the verses is a little cheesy. Sanctus Real turns "Promised Land" into a genuine rock song, complete with two key changes. The Newsboys tune, not a redo at all, is the same original song they did for the Jonah movie. Superchic[k] completely ruins the very first silly song ever by altering the tune and incessantly repeating "everybody, everybody..." Paul Colman rocks "I'm So Blue" in another fun song without much wrong with it. Audio A's old "Hairbrush Song" is hilarious with a fast rocky chorus and laidblack blues on the verses. Relient K's redo of the Pirates, originally for Jonah, shows the most creativity of any of these songs. Unfortunately, this version for some reason leaves out the fourth verse. The Supertones have a lot of fun with "I Can Be Your Friend," including the awesome horn parts on the chorus that replace the "la la la." Tait doesn't change "His Cheeseburger" much besides converting it to rock. Skillet makes "Stand" a little too rocky, and the original song is almost lost between the deafening guitars and John Cooper's screaming-shouting. For the most part it's a lot of fun. With the exception of Superchic[k] and maybe Skillet, these artists turn the songs into rock and show their creativity without losing the fun of the VeggieTales original. This CD is just a lot of fun. A job well done. -- Josh 4/12/2004 |
