ABOUT RIDGEBACKS:Rhodesian Ridgebacks are a wonderful
dog breed forged deep in Africa by big-game hunters of the 19th century.
Originally bred to hunt lions, and often called “African Lion Hounds”,
Rhodesian Ridgebacks combine the strength and courage of the Molosser breeds with the speed, keen scent, eyesight and temperment of the hounds.
Their unique ridge was a contribution from the native African “Hottentot” dog. This distinguishing feature is essentially a long cowlick (hair that grows in
the opposite direction of the coat) down the center of the back. The ridge is known only to 4 breeds: the Rhodesian Ridgeback, the African Hottentot dog,
the Thai Ridgeback and the Phu Quoc dog.
Today, a well-bred Rhodesian Ridgeback is a family companion, guardian and couch potato. The Rhodesian
Ridgeback is a highly intelligent dog, very observant and quick to learn. He is quick to alert to potential dangers and cautious with strangers until they are
accepted by his leaders. He is an active, energetic playmate outside and (with sufficient mental and physical exercise) a contented couch-warmer inside.
Above all, he is a faithful and loyal companion, willing and capable of doing whatever tasks his masters assign.
