The Resting of the Knight

Shawn Stout

My soul seemed to live forever.

I’ve seen all the worlds, and realms, and fantasies,

I’ve lived a life so true to the harmonies

Of a life that has run its course

Way down the path, on obedient horse.

I ran with life’s sweet melodies.

Now I lay here, ready to die,

The crimson tint blood, seemly ready to dye

My hair a ruby hue, and my skin a flushed red.

While you stood above me, ready to defend

The honor I’ve shown you, for you, now I lie

With darkness shady, and you knew quite well,

That the battle would send me on, and possibly to hell.

But I gracefully swung my sword,

Giving you my word,

That I’d defend you, no matter the costs you did tell.

And the battle raged on, fierce was the bloodshed,

Four black knights stricken down, their armor shown red.

And after five more came down,

A sixth saw me, struck, with a frown,

And gleaming eyes shown of death, hoping to make me descend

Into the depths of death, but there you were,

Swinging your sword, steel there to defer

The mortal blow to send me to the dark.

Your swing hit true to its very mark,

And sent the knight down to Lucifer.

But alas, there is no hope of salvaging this soul,

So now I must ask of you, to carry my role,

Please be true to your words, and never forget

The Kingdom’s woes, the battles shan’t to regret,

And to carry your name on, never to writhe in the toll

Of the agony I’ve sent you, and I hope none the much.

As my eyes start to close, your heart feels as such

That you lost one more friend

Who fought true to the end.

But don’t forget, I’ll watch over you until it seems all… too much…

And as I looked down upon the field of green that day,

The funeral was solemn, and the skies were cloudy gray.

I send my love to all that are there,

Sending a ray of light upon tears, crying from the rare

Moments of grief, as my body was there, but my soul lives elsewhere, even today.

My soul will always live on forever.
