Mr. X Biography

Mr. X

There used to be a mysterious man lurking in the shadows, alternately warning and informing Fox Mulder. He was much like Deep Throat, never making the audience sure of his agenda of either complex misinformation or exposure of the truth. One thing different about Mr. X (Steven Williams) was his unwillingness to put himself in harm's way to help Mulder. In the flashback fifth-season episode "Unusual Suspects" it was revealed that as early as 1989 he had encountered Agent Mulder, who back then was not assigned to The X-Files, instead to the Violent Crimes Section of the FBI.

In the second-season episode "One Breath" he approached Mulder in the hospital parking lot and told him that he saw Deep Throat get killed and doesn't want the same thing to happen to him. He duked it out with Walter Skinner in the episode "Endgame" when he refused to divulge Mulder's whereabouts to Agent Scully.

In the episode "Soft Light", Mr. X stuck his nose into Scully and Mulder's case and hindered their investigation by killing a key figure in the case, and kidnapping and putting in captivity the man who had the deadly shadow. He was confronted by Mulder, who told him that he never wanted them to meet ever again. X responded by calling out to him, "You're choosing a dangerous time to go it alone."

Eventually it was discovered that Mr. X had worked for the Cigarette-Smoking Man. In "Wetwired", he showed some of his dark side, gunning down two men under orders from The Cigarette Smoking Man. In "Talitha Cumi", he took surveillance photographs of a meeting between the Smoking Man and the mother of Mulder. Without X's knowledge, the Smoking Man found out about the photos and set out to kill this traitor to his organization by hiring an assasin, leaving X shot dead in "Herrenvolk". As he lay dying, he left Mulder a note scrawled in blood with the initials "SRSG". This clue then led Mulder to a woman from the UN named Marita Covarrubias.
