A Short History of
The Organization of Triangles, New York State

The Organization of Triangles, Inc., of the state of New York, was founded on the basis of service to mankind, love for our country and our flag, commitment to education, and respect for ones self.
The Organization’s founder, Rose E. Scherer, conceived the idea for this organization in 1925, during her term as Grand Matron of the Eastern Star.  She believed that there was a need for a fraternal youth group for the daughters of the Eastern Star, to ready them for further membership in the adult order.
And thus the organization was born.  In the spring of 1927, the first chapter of the "Daughters of the Eastern Star" received its charter.  In 1961 the order was renamed, to become the Organization of Triangles, Inc., of the state of New York, as it is known today.  Since that first charter, the organization has seen the presentation of one hundred and forty seven others state wide.
The triangle was chosen as our symbol because of the three main ideals, which were given as the foundation of the organization; to God (any supreme being), to others, and to ones self.  Mrs. Scherer’s personal motto "not self, but service" lives on today in triangles across the state of New York.
As much as the organization is run by the members, there are also adults who provide them with the guidance and supervision needed for such an undertaking. These adults are constantly present to oversee the activities of the girls, and provide the necessary element of experience, which helps the girls to feel comfortable learning and growing within the organization.
Non-Masonic parents of members are welcome to become involved in the activities of the Organization. Recently, by decision of the organization, parents of members may now take a short obligation which enables them to attend closed meetings. Previously, only Masons, members of the Eastern Star, and Amaranth could attend these special meetings.
Originally, any girl between the ages of 11 and 21 was eligible for membership.  However, in a recent decision passed at Convention 1999, the age limit has been lowered to 10 years.  Still, the girl must be related by blood, marriage or adoption to a Master Mason, member of the Order of the Eastern Star or a member of the Order of Amaranth. Any girl not so related may easily obtain sponsorship.
The newest addition to the order involves the "T2K" initiative. We are faced with a new millennium, full of wonder and possibility. As times are changing so, too, is our organization.
Triangle has met the World Wide Web, allowing its membership the chance to connect with their sisters all over the state of New York; an opportunity once only available every two years at convention has become a part of our daily lives. There are various email groups available to past and present members, as well as our recently updated state website.  Newly initiated members can instantly connect with older girls as well as past members from decades ago, allowing them an opportunity to experience various perspectives early on.
Upon entering this organization, young girls learn the importance of charity and kindness. Girls organize and take part in fundraisers to raise money for such noble causes as the Guide Dog Foundation, sponsoring a girl to continue her education at the Materi Girl’s School in Kenya, the Make a Wish Foundation (and the similar Dream Team, a charity run by the International Order of DeMolay, our “brother” organization), financial assistance for children suffering from sever medical conditions, World Trade Center Relief Funds, and many more. Through parades, fundraisers, and other public events, girls learn to respect and have confidence in themselves.
Members of the organization may also apply to a scholarship fund, open only to members in their senior year of high school.
Every two years, every member of the organization is invited to attend a statewide convention. During this event, the girls may participate in fun activities, such as pool parties, Karaoke nights, a Talent Show, a dance and banquet, and much more. In addition girls may take part in ritual, essay, and poster competitions, to name a few,  as well as attend state meetings to further enhance their confidence and public speaking skills. Convention creates yet another opportunity for girls to meet other members from around New York and voice their ideas and opinions to the state.
For nearly 75 years, the Organization of Triangles has been helping young girls grow into patriotic and confident women, ready to face the ever-changing world around them. As we dawn on this new millennium, our girls are ready to take on any obstacles that may come their way.
