Train to New Orleans
His daddy always said, "Boy,
if you were meant to fly,
you'd been given wings."
So I drove him down to Boston
to catch the train.
He was goin' home,
someone was fixin' to die,
and it was time to go.
He bought himself a ticket.
One way to Louisiana;
To go back to the place he always called home;
If I couldn't be with him
Then I'd send my love along…
on the train to New Orleans.
"I'll be back in two weeks," he told me on the platform
"As soon as I make enough cash for the train fare."
I never doubted his word,
but now it's been two months.
He'd call every week just tell me he's fine, and
Not to worry, that he'd be home soon.
Tonight he told me that
it would be another month.
It was then I made up my mind
I bought myself a ticket
One way to Louisiana
To go to the place that my love called home
I was going to be with him
Bringing my love along
On the train to New Orleans
I arrived at the station, scared to death
I gathered my bags and hailed a cab.
I didn't know what I'd find
at the address I gave the driver.
He gave me a knowing smile,
one that said I know where you're going
"I don't need this paper," he said;
"I'm familiar with the address."
I just looked out at the city, wondering if
I was making a big mistake.
Soon I was at a house that seemed familiar
I had heard all about it in his stories about home.
The cabbie even looked like someone I knew.
He wouldn't accept my money, saying it was on him
And to go and have fun, isn't that why I was there?
I knocked on the door, my heart in my throat
When his sister answered, all she said was
"You're expected…"
My love walked thru the door,
not at all surprised to see me.
He took me into his arms and held me tight.
He comforted me as sobs rocked my body.
I had been so scared, now I was relieved
That he was really all right,
it just took longer than he thought
to raise the money to come back to me.
He bought us tickets
One way to Boston
To the place we had made our home
We were finally together
Brining our love along
On the train from New Orleans.
