Unit Visit to HMAS Gascoyne

TS Adelaide Navy Cadets visited the HMAS Gascoyne Captained by Commander Hill on 10 November 2001.  The HMAS Gaycoyne is Australia's newest warship, the Huon Class coastal mine hunter HMAS GASCOYNE, commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy at HMAS WATERHEN on Saturday 2 June 2001.

GASCOYNE is the fourth of a class of six mine hunter coastals (MHCs) being built by Australian Defence Industries Limited in Newcastle for the RAN.  GASCOYNE will now join sister ships HUON, HAWKESBURY and NORMAN, two of which recently performed well during Exercise Tandem Thrust off the Queensland coast where they successfully demonstrated their new capabilities.  The Huon class is based on the Italian Gaeta Class, modified to suit Australian conditions.

GASCOYNE has a ship's company of 39 and, with her V8 Fincantieri diesel engines, boasts a range of 1600 nautical miles at 12 knots.

She is equipped with a 30mm gun for self-defence and carries two robotic BOFORS Double Eagle Mine Disposal Vehicles for identifying and destroying enemy mines.

Below are some photographs taken on the day of our visit to HMAS Gascoyne when it visited Port Adelaide South Australia.
