How to Legally Change your name in the UK

This is actually one of the easiest but most important things every TS needs to do, In fact it is one of the three things Charing Cross say you must do before the will refer you for GRS.

Now there are a few different ways you can do this, you can either go to a solicitor and ask them to prepare you a statutory declaration, this will only take them a few minutes, but they will then charge you about forty pounds for their time and trouble, and then you still need to go to a different solicitor in order to swear the Oath, which will cost you a fiver.

Or alternately you can copy the blank Stat dec which is below, fill in your own details, and then this will be just as valid, and then all you do is go to a solicitor and swear the oath, It literally does take seconds, and does only cost a fiver!

Blank Statutory Declaration
I, (enter your full new name here in capitals) the deponent refered to in the Schedule hereto formerly know as (Enter your full old name in capitals), being a British citizen by birth do solemnly and sincerely declare as follows:

1. I absolutely and entirely renounce relinquish and abandon the use of my former name as specified in the Schedule hereto ("my former name") and assume adopt and determine to take and use from the hereof the new name in the said Schedule ("my new name") insubstitution for my former name.

2. I shall at all times hereafter in all records deeds documents and other writings and in all actions and proceedings as well as in all dealings and transactions and on all occasions whatsoever use and subscribe my new name in substitution form my former name so relinquished as aforesaid to the intent that I may hereafter be called known and identified by the new name and not by my former name.

3. I authorise and require all persons at all times to identify describe and address me by my new name.

I make this solemn declaration conscientiously believing the same to be true and pursuant to the provisions of the Statutory Declaration Act 1835.
