Popayán is located in the more volatile south of Colombia, with a population of 215K at an altitude of 1737 meters. It is one of two cities Canada warns not to travel to unless it is a necessity (the other city being Cali).

The upside during my stay was a religious parade attended by thousands giving depth to its stylish white colonial architecture. The downside was two groups of punks attempting to lighten my pockets -- both unsuccessful. Despite it being a small city one has to stay aware at all times.
