2001 Record: 39-33 |
The 2001 season came to a close with a double-header sweep of Kelley Cleaning and Munn Lumber. That set the fall league record at a respectable 8-4, and the overall 2001 Tradewinds record at 39-33.
The 2001 Fall Team came through with its second consecutive walk-off victory on Monday night. Colin Shearn blasted a three-run homer to defeat Munn Lumber 14-12 in the bottom of the sixth with the time limit already expired. The previous Monday ended with a 19-18 walk-off victory over Cafe Northwest.
The Fall team is now 6-2 with four games remaining. Both losses have come against a juiced Ron's Auto team.
The Clippers went 2-3 at the Class D State Softball Tournament at Miller Woods in Overland Park, Kansas. Although the end result could have been much better, a good time was again had by all.
The competition was agian pretty good as the two tournament losses were to teams that put up 19 runs each.
The 2001 Fall Season started much differently for Tradewinds than the previous fall. Sparked by four new recruits, Tradewinds started the 12-game season by matching their win total of two from
the previous fall.
The Clippers went 4-2 at the Class E State Softball Tournament at Hitters Park in Cedar Rapids to earn fourth place out of 48 teams. The weekend included the first two Sunday wins for 2001.
Despite losing 5 out of their last 6 games, the Underdogs finished second in the 12-team Summer B2 League. Only a season finale loss by Brown's Heavy Equipment prevented Tradewinds from dropping to third place.
Matt Pete's Inside scoop: "wishing to avoid any heat-induced injuries, the U-dogs coasted through the dog-days of summer to a cool and injury-free 2nd place finish in their first year in
"B" league. Rested and healthy, the weekenders will build on this success and travel to Cedar Rapids hoping for 2nd place or better at the State "E" tourney."
A first-round upset at the hands of Corona Extra (formerly Cy's Roost) meant the end of Tradewinds' two-year reign as District Champions. Despite averaging more than 15 runs per game, the
Clippers went 2-2, and failed to make it to Sunday.
Steve sponsored his own one-day tournament in Ames and the Tradewinds Clippers were only able to muster two wins. Bookend wins versus Seed Ease (Williamsburg, IA) and SoBe were separated by
shameful losses to Ron's Auto, Brown's Heavy Equipment, and tournament champions, Rumpleminze. The 2-3 record was only good enough for fifth place in the 6-team.
The Tradewinds Clippers went 2-3 in Fort Dodge without their star second-baseman. Coincidentally, I don't have a recap.
If anyone would like to submit a summary, please do.
The Tradewinds Clippers went 2-2 in pool play before bowing out in two games in the "A" bracket. After a long-hot day of putting up some decent offense, the Clippers were forced to play a 5th game on Saturday when Sambetti's decided they wanted to start tournament play on Saturday instead of Sunday morning.
For the second time this year, Sunday was cut short by a first game loser's bracket loss. "At least we have the rest of the day to do what we want," said an up-beat Shawn Slezak.
The Tradewinds Clippers started the season by going 1-4 at the 22-team Rumple Minze tournament in Ames. Low-lights included losing to Jacobsen 6-3 and losing to Miller Jack 11-10 when they only had eight players.
The Clippers went 1-2 in pool play before going two and out in the B bracket on Saturday night and in the rain Sunday morning.
