Big Picture of China's booming IT industry

Is your work related to China's IT industry? Do you have the entrepreneurial ambition to start a company in China? If so, come to join us on 2/15 to understand the landscape of China's IT industry. As the 2nd largest market for IT product and services, China is leading the world in many new front like 3G mobile communications, digital TV and Internet applications. Government has played a key role in setting policies to accelerate the growth in these leading industries. Many high profile initiatives have attracted hundreds of million of dollars funding from corresponding government agencies. Many overseas returning students have taken advantages of these initiatives by getting involved. To better understand some of the key directions, we invited two insiders to share with us their view of some Chinas big IT initiatives.
Prof. Jun Li and Prof. QR Wang are senior officials from Tsinghua University and NanKai University, two leading universities in China. After returning from the US, they both deeply involved in helping China's IT industry to adopt advanced western technologies. They are also influential in setting many high level policy issues. We are glad to invite both of them to share with us their view of some big initiatives in China's IT industry.

Dr. Jun Li is our 1980 class alumnus. He co-founded ServGate with a few alumni in 1999 and returned to Tsinghua in 2003. He is now Dean of Research Institute of Information Technology (RIIT, www.riit.tsinghua.edu.cn) and Vice Dean of School of Information Science and Technology (SIST, www.sist.tsinghua.edu.cn), mostly in charge of organizing "big idea" projects serving emerging IT industry and national interest.

Dr. Wang led the first development team from the Nankai University to US in the 1990's, and oversaw the commercialization of the world leading OCR(Optical Character Recognition) technology in the US market: from Windows-based TypeReader retail software in 1991, Macintosh-based TypeReader in 1992, to OpenRTK Licensing software in 1992, which has been successfully migrated to Macintosh, Unix, Solaris, SCO, Linux, OS2, and embedded systems including Windows CE.
With over two decades of experience in the software industry in both the China and US markets, Dr. Wang has formed great insights about global business development, IP protection and US legal systems. Since 2001, Dr. Wang has been invited to be the sole advisor for software exporting at the China Torch Center, one of the special division of China Ministry of Science and Technology , and ExperExchange has become the sole consulting company of the China Offshore Software Engineering Project (COSEP).
Dr. Wang received his PhD degree in Computer Science from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, and his MS. and BS degree in Mathematics from Beijing University.
