Bill's first western novel is a pastiche of the "Max Brand" novels and stories written in the 20's and 30's. Set in the Rio Grande border country in 1876, this novel features a band of renegade outlaws led by gunfighter Barry Silver. They capture an army colonel, Maxwell S. Brandt, and his daughter, holding them captive at a castle in Old Mexico. There the heroes, a trio of western adventurers, effect a daring rescue. The book also involves a frontier circus, and the quest for a legendary wild stallion.
