Bare Facts: Male ~ Born est.1951 ~ Died 1980 ~ Mother C4 ~ Father Unknown ~ Children Unknown ~ ID Notch at top of fin like A5; nick at the bottom
C1 was a full grown male at the beginning of the survey, but researchers estimated his birth date around 1951. It was assumed that his mother was C4, the matriarch, making him brother to Ivory(C6), the current matriarch.
C1 spent most of his time with his uncles, Booker and C7, the only other full-grown males in the pod. He could easily be confused with Top Notch (A5), of the A5 pod, because he had a notch at the top of his fin just like Top Notch. However, C1 also had a nick near the base of the fin.
C1 travelled with Ivory, Booker, C4, C7 and Weynton for a few years, then Ivory gave birth to her daughter Lama. For the next few years, the researchers observed the family with no change.
C1, for whatever reason, did not like boats. It could be that he had been involved in a capture attempt, or he was simply nervous of them. He managed to keep the pod mostly away from them, making it hard for researchers to get close.
In 1979, however, Ivory gave birth once again, to C12, her only child to not have a name. Barely a few months later, C1 passed away in 1980, at the age of around 30. It is unknown why he died at such a young age. He was the first known whale to die in the C6 matriline.
