Interesting tidbits, births, deaths and changes to the Southern Resident population since the publication of the 1999 ID book. All 100% confirmed. These guys are so easy to update! And no, matrilines don't particularly matter in southerns, but they organize things better.

J1-Pod

J2 Matriline
-J30 is male and beginning to slightly sprout 2006
-J14 gave birth to J37 in January 2001
-J37 is female and was named by the Samish First Nations as 'Hy'Shqa' for 'blessing' or 'thank you'
-J14 gave birth again to J40 in December 2004
-J40 is female; she lost her dark colouring very quickly and was officially named by the Samish First Nations as 'Suttles' in honour of a Coast Salish researcher

J8 Matriline
-J8 has a distinctive wheezing when she breathes
-J11 gave birth to J39 in March 2003
-J39 is male
-J27 is sprouting rapidly 2006
-J19 gave birth to J41 in July 2005
-J41 is most likely female

J16 Matriline
-J26 is nearly mature
-J33 now has a nick at the bottom of his fin
-J16 gave birth to J36 in 1999
-J16 may have given birth in 2005, but if so, the calf did not survive
-J16 gave birth between April 28 and May 4, 2007, to a female calf (J42)

J9 Matriline
-J10 died 1999
-J28 received a new nick; she now is startingly similiar to L7
-J35 is female
-J22 gave birth to J38, December 2002

K1-Pod

K3 Matriline
-K26 is male and is sprouting 2006
-K14 gave birth to K36, September 2003
-K16 gave birth to K32 in November 2000; the calf died in 2001
-K16 gave birth to K35, a male calf, in fall 2002

K7 Matriline
-K7 was thought to be missing in 2005, but was spotted later in the season
-K13 gave birth to K34, a male calf, in late fall 2001
-K20 is actually female
-K25 is sprouting 2005
-K20 gave birth to K38, December 2004

K4 Matriline
-K4 died 1999
-K12 gave birth to K37, January 2004
-K37 is male
-K31 died 2005
-K22 is female

-L32 died 2005; she was seen with a sunken blowhole and weak breathing with her son L87 on October 4, 2005; the pods came together and mingled quietly in an unusual meeting-she was never seen again afterwards

-L43 gave birth to L104 in October 2004
-L72 gave birth to L105 in January 2004; at first, there was confusion, and L105 was thought to be L27's calf
-L43 died in 2006; L104 has been seen travelling with L72 since its mother's death

-L60 died in 2002, washing up in Oregon in May
-L71 is a mature male, 2005
-L71 died in 2006 after appearing horrifically thin

L21 Matriline
-L91 is female
-L47 gave birth to L99 in November 2000; the calf died 2001
-L47 gave birth to L102 in 2002, but the calf died the same year
-L47 gave birth to L107 in June 2005; it died the same month

-L39 died 2001
-L98 was male; he disappeared in 2001 and appeared in Nootka Sound up north. After plans to remove him and return him to his family failed, he was eventually sucked into a propellor and killed on March 10, 2006
