I can't remember one time where I saw anyone in Vietnam using more modern farming methods than this.  Everything was done by hand.  You would see kids out moving water, and I mean huge quanties of water, by hand.   They planed by hand, they tilled by hand, they reaped their crops by hand, and they winnowed the rice by hand.  A lot of their crop would be kept in large crocks, often buried in the ground.  I imagine this was a considerable portion of their total wealth.
