FIFTH CENSUS OF THE UNITED STATES
1830
POPULATION SCHEDULES
KENTUCKY
VOL 6
THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES
Washington: 1946
INTRODUCTORY NOTE
In this microcopy are reproduced the population schedules of the United
States (1830).
The schedules for each State or Territory comprise one or more volumes,
and the volumes are arranged alphabetically by name of State or Territory
and
thereunder by volume number. Each volume has been photographed on a
separate
roll; Volume 1 of the Alabama schedules appears on roll 1, and Volume
13 of the
Virginia schedules appears on roll 201, which closes the microcopy.
The ten volumes of schedules for Kentucky are reproduced on
rolls 33-42 of the microcopy. Population data were returned separately
for
each of the 83 counties. The schedules are arranged by county in alphabetical
order, except that Butler County precedes Bullit County, Cumberland
County
precedes Clay County, Hardin County follows Henry County, and Pendleton
County follows Pulaski County.
The first and last counties represented in each of the volumes
are as follows:
Vol 1 (Roll 33), Adair - Bourbon
Vol 2 (Roll 34), Bracken - Casey
Vol 3 (Roll 35), Christian - Fayette
Vol 4 (Roll 36), Fleming - Grayson
Vol 5 (Roll 37), Green - Hardin
Vol 6 (Roll 38), Hickman - Lincoln
Vol 7 (Roll 39), Livingston - Monroe
Vol 8 (Roll 40), Montgomery - Pike
Vol 9 (Roll 41), Pulaski - Todd
Vol10 (Roll 42), Trigg - Woodford
These volumes are in the National Archives where they constitute
part of Record Group No. 29, Records of the Bureau of Census.
Entries in a particular volume may be cited as follows: National
Archives; Record Group No. 29, Records of the Bureau of Census;
Fifth Census (1830), population schedules, vol. [no. of volume
cited], sheet [no. of sheet cited].

A recapitulation appears at the end of the section for each
county.
The information in the schedules is presented under the names
of heads of families and comprises, for each family, facts of the age-group
distribution of its members (male and female) of race (including a
distinction
between free and slave Negros), and of physical disabilities. The only
names that appear in the schedules, therefore are the names of heads
of families or of individuals who were not enumerated within a family
or
household unit.
iii
Although several sets of page numbers appear on the schedules,
the only pagination that is consecutive throughout the volume is by
sheet
number; that is to say, one number is assigned to every two facing
pages
and appears in pencil on the left-hand page and is stamped in ink on
the
right-hand page. These two facing pages must be read together in order
to obtain all information respecting a particular family. Consequently
since
the page size permitts of photographing only one page to the frame,
it
will be necessary to examine two frames of the microcopy with reference
to each other, and on the two related frames the same sheet number
will appear. (remaining portion of title pages omitted for brevity)
iv
Jessamine County, Kentucky, 1830 Census beginns on page 184. It is
transcribed from copy of microfilm to the best of my ability. Not all
of
the names could be read clearly and I made note of any doubt or omitted
the portions I simply could not read. (Thomas S Smith).
Page 184 is copy of typewritten title page "Jessamine County"
facing page has note from census taker.
This requires column headings and page titles to be of any use.
The titles and rows are labeled as follows for this page and all
following pages.
Top of page outside margins:
"SCHEDULE of Whole Number of Persons within the Divison alloted to"
Column Titles begin inside margins comprising a table as follows;
beginning from left to right. (A page equals one-half page -- titles)
Name of County, City, Ward -- omitted for this as all will be
Jessamine County, Kentucky for 1830.
