Ancestors of Carolyn Jane Brown / Andy Lee Cox, prepared by Mrs. Autumn Cox of Corsicana, TX
The opening portion of the printed text narrative portion of her report follows:
How the Davis Family Got From Wales to Texas
The Davis family originally came from Wales. They spelled their name Daviss. It is not known exactly when they arrived in America, but we know they were here before the American Revolution. They settled in Virginia. Records indicate that most of them lived in Prince William County Virginia.
They all had large families, usually 10 to 14 children were common. James Davis had twelve children in his family. He lost four sons in the War of the Revolution. After the war James Davis moved his family to Jessamine County Kentucky, some of them relocated in Nelson County Kentucky.
His son James B. Davis raised his family also in Jessamine County, and also had twelve children. Records indicate the Davis family arrived in Kentucky about 1797. The 1820 census records indicate they were still in Kentucky.
The 1830 census records indicate that James B Davis moved to Cass County, Illinois. One of the sons was Elijah Davis. Elijah Davis married Elizabeth in Kentucky, but moved to Illinois when he was quite young."
paragraphs above are quoted from her report and in yellow text.
There are a number of things the report missed and made errors on. Elijah and Elizabeth were married in Cass County, Illinois not in Kentucky. James B Davis moved the family in 1835 not 1830 as he was on 1830 Census for Jessamine County, Kentucky and other references on this site verify 1835 as the year they moved. Obituary news article on Edward Davis, Elijah Davis' brother indicates the family moved in 1835. There is a James Davis listed in Morgan County, Illinois on 1830 census for Illinois but it is Julia Ann Davis father. She married Edward Davis son of James B Davis. Jesse Davis was a Captain in the Virginia Line during the American Revolution and died in Nelson County, Kentucky. Reference Abstract of Graves of Revolutionary Patriots, Vol I, Ancestry.com, DAVIS Jesse Sr Capt Cem, back of grade school, Nelson KY 31. Also Jesse Davis had a son named Elijah Davis. Mr. Leroy Lewis sent a copy of the Dawson-Davis family report, that shows this Jesse Davis was son of Isaac Davis and Elizabeth Kincheloe of Prince William County Virginia, and grandson of William Davis and Ellen Bland of Prince William County Virginia and also Charles County Maryland. Thomas Davis and Jesse Davis grandfather William were probably brothers. Both left wills in Prince William County Virginia with William's will also of Charles County Maryland. Thomas was born in 1693 and William in 1695. Thomas Davis was the progenitor of the Davis family that married into the Carter family, a prominent family from Virginia. I believe the family link between Jesse Davis of Nelson County Kentucky and James B Davis may be through these two brothers William and Thomas Davis. James B Davis is a descendant of Thomas Davis born 1693 of Prince William County Virginia.
