Stickley
Canadian Forces Base Esquimalt 
is located just west of Victoria,
British Columbia.
The role of the CFB Esquimalt
is to support the ships
of the Canadian Pacific Fleet.
There are 4000 military and
2000 civilians working at the base.
Annually, the prescence of the base
contributes about $340million to the local economy.


The area known
as
Esquimalt,
pronounced
"Ess-KWY-malt",
is an anglicized version
of the
native Indian word
"es-whoy-malth", meaning
"a shoaling place."
The signal tower,
called
Bickford Tower
in honour of Commander 
Richard F.
Bickford
was built in 1901
to facilitate communication
with ships
in the harbour.
