ITTA BENA, Miss. -- Texas Southern scored 21 fourth-quarter points on two touchdowns and an interception return to defeat Mississippi Valley State 38-21 Saturday.
Adam Lamb was 15-of-29 passing for 199 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Tigers (3-4, 2-2 Southwestern Athletic Conference).
Besides the two touchdown passes to Reed, Lamb also connected with Cortez Hankton on a 37-yard pass in the first quarter.
The Delta Devils (0-6, 0-3) answered with two second-quarter touchdowns on 22- and 10- yard runs from Courtney Smith and Tommy Adams and a 10-yard scoring run by Smith to go up 21-10 with 10 minutes to go in the third quarter.
The Tigers then started chipping away at Mississippi Valley State's lead.
Jerrell Singletary scored on a 10-yard run with 6:17 left in the third period to make it 21-17, and then Tyrone Reed caught his first touchdown pass -- a 31-yarder from Lamb -- with 14:20 remaining in the game. Vince Patrick's extra-point kick put TSU back on top 24-21.
Reed got his second touchdown with 2:22 left in the game when he caught a 16-yarder from Lamb to make it 31-21.
The Tigers put the game out of reach 20 seconds later when Santino Hall returned an interception 36 yards for a touchdown. Patrick's fifth extra-point kick of the night made it 38-21.
Smith ran for 117 yards on 26 carries to lead the Delta Devils' offensive attack, and Carey Weaver was 12-of-26 passing for 174 yards.
The Tigers return to action, 1:30 p.m., Saturday, October 27 against Grambling State in Grambling, LA.
