TSU Volleyball Players Earn All-SWAC Honors

Houston, TX - -Texas Southern University senior outside hitter Gabrielle Campbell and senior outside hitter Deatra Brandon were named to the first and second Preseason All-SWAC Volleyball Team respectively. Campbell, a senior from Willowridge High School played in 87 games and was fourth on the team with 228 digs. Brandon, a graduate of Eisenhower, led the SWAC in digs (3.37 per game).

The Lady Tiger were picked to finish third in the conference.

Senior Volleyball Player Out for the Season

Houston, TX - -- Senior outside hitter, Shana Coates will miss the 2001 volleyball season after undergoing reconstruction surgery of her hand as a result of an automobile accident. The Channelview High School product played in 70 games and was second on the team in hitting percentage. Coates and was released Sunday night and will be out for the rest of the season.

Another TSU player, Sharice Gilbert, a transfer from Grambling State University sustained minor injuries and was released.

"Volleyball Camp went exceptionally well, everyone had essential basic skills" said Coach Fisher. Despite the loss of starter Shana Coates, there are other talented ladies that will step up and fill the void."

The Lady Tigers will play against past players in an exhibition game 7 p.m., August 31 in the H&PE Arena.

TSU Bowling to Host Benefit

Houston, TX - -The Texas Southern Bowling team will host "A Night of Elegance Dinner and Dance" benefiting the program, 9 p.m.-2 a.m., September 8, at the Edwin Hornberger Center located at the Texas Medical Center (2151 W. Holcombe).

Texas Southern Athletics Week Events

Houston, TX - -Houston, TX. -The Texas Southern University Athletics Department will host four events in conjunction with the Labor Day Classic, 7 p.m., Saturday, September 1, in the Reliant Astrodome.

Houston, TX - -The Texas Southern University football weekly press conference is scheduled for Tuesdays during the 2001 football season at 10:30 a.m. The press conference will be held each week at the Family Café Restaurant located at 2712 Blodgett Street. A light breakfast will be served to members of the media. Each week's meeting will feature head coach Bill Thomas and players from TSU's football team. TSU exceeded expectations in 2000, beginning the season 7-0 and finishing with its best record (8-3) since 1952. The Tigers look to continue that momentum Saturday night as they host Prairie View A&M University in the 17th Annual Labor Day Classic at 7:00 p.m..
