The Comoros were peopled initially from Polynesia, then later from East Africa and the Arab world. The islands came under French control between 1843 and 1886 and were administered jointly with Madagascar from 1912 to 1946. | |
The island nation of Comoros is
situated in the Mozambique Channel between Madagascar and the African mainland. It
comprises three main islands--Grande Comore, Anjouan, and Moheli (renamed Njazidja,
Nzwani, and Mwali, respectively, in 1977) A fourth island in the Comoros archipelago,
Mayotte, is considered by the Comoran government to be part of the country; its status is
unsettled. |

In July 1975, Comoros unilaterally declared its independence. |
