Natal

First settled by the British in 1824, Natal was contested by Bantu-speaking ZULU natives, British settlers, and Afrikaners. British annexation in 1843 prompted an Afrikaner exodus. Natal is bounded by the Indian Ocean in the east, Swaziland and Mozambique in the north, and Lesotho in the west.
