Much of the British acquisition of Nigeria was accomplished by the Royal Niger Company under Sir George Goldie, and British claims to the Niger Basin were recognized by the other European powers at the Conference of Berlin in 1885. In 1914 the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria was established. | |
