| In 1859, David LIVINGSTONE, the British explorer, visited the area, and this paved the way for the arrival of British settlers. In 1891 the British protectorate of Nyasaland was created. In 1953, Northern Rhodesia, Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), and Nyasaland (now Malawi) were brought together by the British into the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. |
