Orange Free State

The region was annexed by the British in 1848 but was granted its independence in 1854. In 1900, during the SOUTH AFRICAN WAR (1899-1902) between the Afrikaners and the British, the Free State was made the Orange River Colony of the United Kingdom.

The colony regained its independence in 1907 and joined the Union of South Africa in 1910.
