Senegal, the westernmost country in Africa, has a 600-km (373-mi) Atlantic coastline. It is bordered on the south by Guinea-Bissau and Guinea, on the east by Mali, and on the north, across the Senegal River, by Mauritania. The independent enclave of Gambia nearly divides the country.

Senegal became fully independent from France in 1960.
