The area was part of the German colony of Togoland (1884-1914). It was then administered by France and Britain in 1915, and till 1960 by France alone,  as a League of Nations mandate and later as a UN trust territory.

The Republic of Togo is located on the Gulf of Guinea in western Africa immediately north of the equator. It is a long, narrow country, lying between Benin on the east and Ghana on the west, with Burkina Faso bordering the north.

Togo gained independence on Apr. 27, 1960.
