In today's Media World there are more representations of gay characters on television. Gay characters are appearing in Top Primetime shows and there are also many shows on now that focus around a central gay theme, with the central character or characters being gay. A list of some prime examples follow: |
ER is an Emmy Award winning show and has been rated the Top drama series each of its eight years on television. In its 7th season it introduced a gay themed storyline into the show. One of its main characters (Dr. Kerry Weaver) began a lesbian relationship and an exploration of this new found self. NBC has continued this storyline into its 8th season. |
Will And Grace is an Emmy and Golden Globe Winning Television Series based around a gay storyline. There are Lead and supporting characters that are gay and all episodes address gay topics. |
The Ellen Show is a new series that is in many ways a spin off of "ELLEN" a groundbreaking Television series in which Ellen Degeneres, the star of the show, came out. It was the first ever television show to have a lead character that was openly gay. |
Queer As Folk is a new television series that addresses the lives of Gay Americans. The majority of the characters, both lead and supporting are gay and all episodes address issues gays and lesbians face in daily life. |
This is an academy award winning short film and was featured in an HBO special hosted by Ellen Degeneres in support of the Project of the same name. The Trevor Project was created to help youth struggling to come to terms with their sexual identity. They provide a 24-hour hotline and other resources for Gay and Lesbian youth in need. |
The Laramie Project is a film about the effects of the death of Gay hate crime victim Mathew Shepard. The web site provides information on teaching tolerance as well as other helpful tools such as message boards. |
This campaign waged by MTV airs commercial spots and programming geared toward tolerance and equal liberties. It also has a web page component that provides links to helpful sites, hotline numbers, and volunteering and scholarship information. |
This Gay and Lesbian Documentary program aired on PBS. It is an exploration of gay history in America and provides graphic documentation of gay struggles in The United States. |
In The Life is a gay news program aired on PBS that provides information on current Gay and Lesbian issues from Gay and Lesbian reporters. |

Yet in modern day media forms the Gay and Lesbian community are beginning to break through the barriers of prejudice and becoming a part of mainstream media.
