Type of Lesson: Introductory Lesson Topic: Technology of the Native Americans Learner Outcome: Students will be able identify Native Americans creation tools. It’s value and importance to their cultures. Also they will distinguish difference uses of tools among different tribes. Lesson Development: The main objective of this lesson will be the importance of stone and obsidian tools. We will discuss main uses of these tools- ways to hunt, fish, farm, eat, and trade. Also we will be discussing interaction of the Native Americans with the Europeans in terms of trading. Other main objective of this lesson is the use of today’s technologies to determine the age of past artifacts. NJ Core Curriculum Standards: History: *Standard 6.5: All students will acquire historical understanding of varying cultures throughout the history of New Jersey, the Unites States, and the world. Science: *Standard 5.3: All students will develop an understanding of how people of various cultures have contributed to the advancement of science and technology, and how major discoveries and events have advanced of science and technology. Materials Used: Textbooks, web pages, and over-heads projector, slides, and other reading materials. Lesson Follow-up: After this lesson, students will be divided into groups of four. They will be responsible for describing one Native American tribe. Group presentations will include further research from class notes and discussions. They will be able to present their tribe’s use and meaning of their tools. They will be responsible to gather visual aids to show to their classmates. |
