Hepatitis B Update:
Beginning Fall 2003, it is
mandatory to have completed the Hepatitis B Vaccine series and show proof of
immunity. The Hepatitis B Vaccine is administered as a series of 3 injections
over a 6 month period. 1-2 months after receiving injection #3, a blood test is
performed to check for the presence of Hepatitis B surface Antigens (HBsAb
titer). A positive result indicates that the student has developed the desired
protective antibodies to Hepatitis B and is considered immune. A negative result
indicates that the student has not received immunity and is therefore still
susceptible to Hepatitis B. This occurs in a small fraction of the population.
The recommended course of action for those who have a negative titer is to
complete the entire Hepatitis Vaccine series for a second time.
Students must show documentations of immunization and proof of immunity via the
HbsAb titer lab report prior to registering for any Nursing Course.
