Sorio Wins TTMIST's SSG President TC Scribes Caps 10 Awards at RTSPC's03

Rodel Sorio, fourth year Informaton Technology student and an active member of League of Filipino Students (LFS), was electecd as the new Supreme Student Government President with his eleven point agenda to serve the students of Tiburcio Tancinco Meomorial Institute of Science and Technology (TTMIST) on July 22, 2004.

Rodel Sorio represented the Samar Party in which most of his line-up were elected also on other SSG posts with Glen Gabon as Vice President.

There were three parties that vied for Supreme Student Government (SSG) as well as Departamental Student Government(DSG) posts. Samar Party with Rodel Sorio as President, Karamay Party with Vincent Patrick Cabral as President and Rights Party with Ryan Amores as President.

The one-week exhausting preparation of the SSG Election would not have been a success without the efforts and leadership of the Student Electoral Board headed by Rolly Abaro, a third year BSED student with the assistance of the incumbent Diretor for Student Organization, Mr. Leo Lacaba.

The eleven point agenda of Rodel Sorio are: 1) transparency in fiscal administration of SSG funds; 2) opposition to any exhorbitant fees that serve to burden the already impoverished studentry; 3) opposition to any proposition of tuition and matriculation fee hike for the ensuing school year; 4) monitoring of the proper implementation in distribution of proceeds per CHED order of tuition fee increase for his school year; 5) lobbying in the Board of Trustees for continuing upgrading and learning facilities in the campus; 6) encouragement of active student participation in all matters affecting them through periodic student assemblies and consultation; 7) conduct evaluation with the students every after semester on teaching performanceand learning facilities and recommend solutions thereto to the boardof trustees;8) upholds rights of student to freely organize and mobilize their ranks in order to upholds their democratic interest; 9) upholds academic freedom; 10) endeavor to genuinely implement the campus journalism act by establishing a truly independent and relevant school paper; 11) establish an indepedent student council that will truly represent the interest of students.

These are his eleven point agenda for school year 2004-2005.

The courier staffers bagged 10 awarads in the regional Tertiary Press Conference at the Daniel Z. Romualdez Memorial Elementary conference Hall, Tolosa, Leyte last November 28-29, 2003.

With theme " Establishing closer Ties Among Tertiary School Publications in Eastern Visayas", the said annual gab was participated in by private teriary schools, state clleges and unversities form all over of Region 8. Among others are University of Eastern Philippines, Eastern Samar State College, Southern Leyte College, Christ The King College, Samar College, Saint Mary College, Leyte State University, Saint Paul Business School, Naval Institute of Technology, Palompon Institute of Technology, Biliran National Agricultural School, University o Eastern Philippines and Tiburcio Tancinco Memorial Institute of Science and Technology.

The representatives of TTMIST-Courier was led by Ms. Grabriela T. Sabencio, Director, Student Publication.Among the staffers were Luzviminda G.Fuerzas, editor-in chief; Thea Christine Mercurio and Rolly Abarro, associate editors; Rex Ecal, Elmer Doropan and Rex Tubellez, artist; Marlon Prudenciado and Emmanuel Cuaninco, news editor,respectively.

The event included arrays of lecture and competitions as well as beauty contest in area of concern in the lectures were editorial writing, editorial cartooning, features writing, sports writing, news writing, copy reading and headlining, desktop publishing and photo journalism.

In the group category, the Courier magazine was judged second place in the region while the Buds ranked third place as the Best Special Publication.

Meanwhile, the staffers brought home eight awards in the individual category of the said gab- Rex Ecal was awarded as 1st place Photojournalism (English), 2nd place Highest Pointer, 2nd place Editorial Writing; Rex Tubelleza ranked place 1st in Editorial Cartooning(Filipino); Marlon Prudenciado got 2nd place in Feature Writing(Filipino); Luzviminda Fuezas was 3rd place in Desktop Publishing (English); Emmanauel Cuanico ranked 3rd place in Coryreading and Headlining while Roll Abarro took the 5th Place in Editorial Writing (English).

Ms. G. T. Sabenicio took the pride of being awarded as one of the best Publication Advisers in Region 8.
