Jean Negrulesco's 1953
masterpiece is one of the great gwg movies. Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable
and Lauren Bacall play three women who are determined to get themselves
rich husbands. They decide that looking rich themselves and put together
their meagre resources to rent an expensive New York penthouse.
Marilyn's character is very myopic but refuses to wear her glasses. "Men aren't attentive to girls who wear glasses",
she says and proceeds to walk into walls and generally play the vapid
myope. For us OOs this is heaven. The fabulous 50s glasses are just the
start. She twiddles them, puts them on, takes them off, aaaaaaaaah! And
at the end she gets her man, clearly an OO.
Marilyn was allegedly a gwg herself but there is
little evidence of it in this film. No, they're the dreaded planos. But
wonderful fun nevertheless.
