Time Keeping Rules | |||||

In an effort to bring consistency and ensure records can be properly recorded it is important that all time keepers use the same approach and observe the following procedures: |
![]() |
|||
![]() |
![]() |
Time keepers operate the stop watch using the index finger of the dominant hand, NOT the thumb. |
![]() |
||
![]() |
![]() |
The stop watch is started on the light on the starter's gun not the noise. |
![]() |
||
![]() |
![]() |
Times should be kept on both clocks until the chief time keeper has recorded them and only then cleared. This is important if records are broken because all recorded times must be noted. |
![]() |
||
![]() |
![]() |
Times are taken with all time keepers working at the end of the pool NOT from the side. |
![]() |
||
![]() |
![]() |
Children of timekeepers should be encouraged to remain with other children on the seats at the side of the pool, rather than with them time keeping. Noise and distraction affect ability to time keep effectively. |

Record Attempts | |||||
![]() |
Where the swimmer attempting the record swim (if known) comes in first then the following rules should apply: |
![]() |
|||
![]() |
![]() |
At all times three timekeepers shall time the swimmer - This is the chief time keeper and two lane timekeepers. |
![]() |
||
![]() |
![]() |
If the one of the times recorded falls above the record and the other below then the third time is the decider viz the third time must be below the existing record as well to be deemed a new record. The slowest of the two below the record is the new record. ie in this case there must be three times. |
![]() |
||
![]() |
![]() |
If two of three times is above the record and one is below then the middle time is taken (and hence the record is not broken). |
![]() |
||
![]() |
![]() |
In the case of two of the times being exactly the same (and are below the record) and the third being above the record then the record is deemed broken. |
![]() |
||
![]() |
![]() |
If the times recorded by the time keepers fall below the existing record and one timer malfunctions then two times are sufficient and the slowest time of the two will be recorded as the new record. This is consistent with the approach used in general races - if the one of the lane time keepers clocks don't work then the time is taken using the Chief timekeeper and the single lane timekeeper recording the slowest time. |

Where the swimmer breaking the record does not come in first: |
![]() |
|||
![]() |
![]() |
If a swimmer breaks a record in usual club races and does not come in first (ie with only two timekeepers) then the slowest of the two times shall be recorded of the two clocks as per the regular club swim timekeeping. The record should be deemed broken! |
