Community Development -
February 2001
Wow! The first month of this year
really few by didn’t it. I would like to send out a special thanks to our
BINGO WITH THE ELDERLY team of President Steve, Cindy Anne Sparkes, Connie
Allen, Leah Decker and Rob Ethridge. The six of us played bingo with about 25
residents of the Lexington Court Nursing Home. This was definitely one of
those warm fuzzy projects that everyone should come out and participate in at
least once this year.
HOLOCAUST MUSEUM:
On Saturday, February 10, we will be helping
the Virginia Holocaust Museum prepare their new location. We will meet at the
corner of 20th and Cary Streets at 1:00 PM to help break down old
self-storage containers. All of the tools will be provided. Our goal is to
provide 10 people to help out. I will personally provide lunch for anyone that
participates in both this and Project WARM. Let Kay or Sandy know if you are
interested in helping out.
DESIGNATED DRIVERS:
We will be helping designated drivers on Friday, February 16. Our Chapter will
receive money for each team of designated drivers we provide. The money we
receive will go toward our goal of 20 camperships. Call Kay if you are
interested in helping out.
DRESS FOR SUCCESS: We
have extended this project to run through March. Bring your suits to any
meeting or project and someone from the CD team will be there to accept it.
They will provide you with a receipt for tax purposes if you so desire.
Dress for Success is a non-profit
organization that helps low-income women make tailored transitions into the
workforce. After job training, each client receives a suit for an interview.
She receives a second suit when she gets a job. Dress for Success can accept
only suits, not sportswear or casual clothes. Don’t forget our goal is 50
suits.
BINGO WITH THE ELDERLY:
On Thursday, February 15, we will meet at
Parham Park and Ride at 6:30 PM. A caravan will travel to Lexington Nursing
Home. We will play bingo with the residents from 7 – 8 pm. The residents
have a great time and so do we! Our goal is to have at least 5 members attend
this. We exceeded our goal last month. If you have questions, call Sandy
Bernstein (270-4064).
MEALS ON WHEELS:
We deliver meals to people unable to get out for a nice warm meal. We will be
delivery at lunchtime on Friday, February 23. Please call Philip (965-3036) if
you have questions or if you are planning on helping out.
PROJECT WARM:
We meet every Saturday at 9 AM at our wood lot where we load our pick up
trucks with firewood for families unable to pay their heating bill. We need
help loading trucks, driving trucks and splitting wood. For directions call
Min (358-9288) or Don (763-1689).
HAPPY HUMP DAY HAPPY: Our
Hump Day Happy Hours will be on February 7 & 21. The one on the 21st
will be our first big membership push of the year. Come out and help us share
the Jaycee experience.
GONG SHOW: Our
first fundraiser for Camp Virginia Jaycee will take place on Saturday, March
24. We are bringing back the Gong Show (Tuckahoe Style). Min Casali is
chairing this project. If you would like to help out by being on the committee
or participating as a contestant, please get in touch with Min. This is the
first big fundraiser for our campership goal this year.
Dare to Care and Share!
