Our students are diligently involved in what we call "AR" reading -- reading books for points and rewards. Around Thanksgiving, our students wrote book reviews of some of their favorite books. Here are some excerpts from representative samples. Enjoy! Note: All Pender County School Internet guidelines have been observed. Some student responses have been lightly edited for grammar and syntax.
More reviews are on the way!
I liked the book. It was interesting. There were 3 orphans who were staying with their uncle. The uncle, whose name was Count Olaf, didn't like the kids, he only wanted to take their money. It's a great book, the most interesting I ever read.
A Boy and His Bear is a great book! The characters are so realistic you think they are real. The writing style was very appropriate. It was easy to read. When you look at the cover, it sums up half of the story. I thought it was great, because it gets your adrenaline going. That's how intense it gets.
One of my favorite books of all time is Charlotte's Web by E.B. White. It begins when the girl sees her father with an ax getting ready to kill a little pig. She saves the pig and names it Wilbur. I liked this story because it was sad. I like sad books. Some of the characters in this book were realistic and some were not.
This story is very exciting. It's about a princess who didn't like being a princess. One day she ran away from her castle and went to work for a dragon named Kazal. There were wizards who tried to steal the dragon's magic. After someone poisons the King of Dragons, all the wizards got together to try to make an evil dragon the new king.
This book is about a girl who can't remember what happened to this boy she knows. The boy helps her remember from the grave. She keeps drawing the face of the boy. This was a really great story because the author really knows how to express himself in what he is trying to say to the reader. The writing style was really good. I think a lot of students would like this story because it is easy to understand and the words are readable for high school and middle school students. It also got my interest when I saw it in the library. I will rate this book 4 stars. I have never read a book like this before. I really enjoyed this book a lot!
This story is about a boy whose mother did drugs and left him alone in their house. One day when he was three years ago, he burned his house down by playing with a lighter. His Aunt Queen took him in. Six years later his mom came back. He had a new sister and a dad. His aunt died, so he went to live with them. I like the story a lot because it tells how they got away from their mean stepdad and stuck together. I would give the story five stars because it helps young kids who are being abused.
This book is about an old Japanese woman who liked to make rice dumplings. One day one of her dumplings fell right into the Earth's floor and rolled and rolled. She chased after it and fell in. She med gods and other creatures who captured her and ordered her to make rice dumplings with a magic paddle. This story teaches us that even if we are down, we will get better. It is an excellent, funny book for anyone who likes fiction. I give it 5 stars.
With this book you will discover easy ways to provide the best in care for your guinea pig. A small animal expert offers information so that you can create a wonderful relationship with your new friend. It is a wonderful book.
Harry Potter gets put on trial in the Ministry of Magic, and is let loose. Ahtough going back to Hogwarts isn't so great, there's a new teacher named Professor Umbridge, and he's having temper troubles. Many new dangers await Harry, Hermione, Ron, Sirius, and everyone else. New spells, enchantments, friends, enemies, dangers, and more await young Harry Potter in his 5th and maybe final year of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I like this story because it's enchanting and exciting. They may know magic, but they still have the same problems that kids their age have. I enjoyed this book a whole lot. It's an amazing book, so I gave it 5 stars.
Stanley had to go to a camp where all the kids dig holes. Stanley meets some new friends and learns about his grandfather. I liked the story because it shows friendship and caring. The characters are very realistic. The writing was appropriate; it was just right for me.
This book is about Tony Hawk, a pro skateboarder. He has landed the 900, one of the hardest tricks to do on a board. He has three sons. I loved the story because it was about skateboarding. The writing style was appropriate, it was in the middle.
The book has many characters. It's mostly about two different groups, the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs are the rich, mean, snobby people. The Greasers are bad (but not all of them). The main characters are Ponyboy, Johnny, Dallas, Two-bit, Soda Pop, and Steve. They are all Greasers. A lot of stuff happens in the book. This book is really good for any age. It had a lot of action in it, and was very realistic. The characters seemed real: they deal with real problems and situations. The writing is appropriate for a 6th grader to read. I would give it 5 out of 5 stars.
Passport to Danger is about two boys named Frank and Joe Hardy. They are in a soccer tournament in Paris. From the moment they arrive, strange things start to occur. Using spy gear, they track down each other when lost, and disguise their voices. Their closest ally might not be what he seems! I liked the story because it has a lot of action and suspense, and because it was ironic. The writing style is appropriate for middle school readers.

It's about a knight and his squire off on a quest to find a white hound and a white mule. On their way, they meet more people. The squire keeps hearing things and seeing things from another world. Their quest becomes more difficult, especially when they find they have more hard tasks to accomplish. They sure go on amazing adventures! It's a really good book, and a wild adventure. The writing style was just right. I'd give this book 4 stars because it is a truly brilliant book.
This book is probably the best book I've ever read so far! I like it because it sort of relates to how my life is, especially the characters, because the person who wrote this book made it so realistic that it's almost like they could be real! The way the author wrote the book was perfect for the story. It's not too easy or too hard for a person that might be reading on a 4th grade level. Many people I would think would like to read this book. It's about how life could be in reality.
I really liked this story because "a mouse falling in love with a princess" is the cutest thing in the world! The writing style was perfect. It was easy and very sweet. I think everyone should read this book. It is a lovely book.
A mother and father take their three kids on a trip to Alabama to get out of the freezing cold. The oldest son, Byron, learns a lesson about being responsible. I liked the story because of the way it was told. The author made the characters seem so real. Also, the book was easy for me to read.
