River Murray - South Australia in flood

The River Murray is part of a system of rivers which in navigable for over 3,000 miles. It's source is located high in the Australian Alps, which boasts a greater area of snow cover than the land mass of Switzerland.

After receiving the waters of its principal tributaries, the Darling, Murrumbidgee, Goulburn, Mitta Mitta, Ovens, Campaspe, and Lodden, the River Murray is on it's way to the Southern Ocean at Goolwa, South Australia.

White-man has been aware of significant flooding of the River in 1846, 1852, in 1870 a measurement of 35 feet 8 inches was taken at Morgan, SA. In 1890, 27 feet; 1917, 29 feet 3 inches; 1931, 29 feet 7 inches; and in 1956 the River reached 37 feet 3 inches, this was the highest recorded by white man.
