Born May 1976, in Cluj Napoca, Romania. Grew up in Bucharest, went to school at Ciovica School (Gnerala 3), just a few blocks from our apartment. I was a happy kid, thanks to my parents. |
We lived in a typical communist apartment building on Titulescu street. We called them the matchboxes, but we grew fond of our dwellings. I had my own room, tastefully decorated by mom and dad with jungle motifs (i.e. I had all sorts of lions and zebras on my curtains and bedcover). The kids who lived in the buildings would play together a lot; it was so much fun! My favorite games were hide-n-seek and Star Wars imitations. Unfortunately, I was never good in soccer or sports...hmmm I wonder why. |
I spent a lot of time studying. My mom pushed me very hard to be the best at school (which was not the case all the time). I loved all "inexact" sciences: history, literature, languages, and dreaded math and chem. |
Romanians were fed daily doses of communist propaganda, and I had to join the ranks of the red youth at 5, as a "Country Hawk". At 10, I became a "pioneer" after swearing allegiance to the party and the state. As pioneers, we would have to wear these red and white uniforms on Mondays when we went to school. Crazy. |
I always loved watching TV. I can't even remember when I first discovered the dreambox. I was fascinated by it! Unfortunately, starting in 1985, Romanian tv switched from quality TV to broadcasting only Ceausescu's image for two hours a day: from 8PM to 10 PM. Thank God for VCR's and people smuggling tapes in! We set up antennas that would let us watch Bulgarian and Russian television. At night we would listen to Radio Free Europe to get real news and keep our hopes for a new life. |
