Tales of Johor Bahru Hainanese Beef Noodles ![]() Just a quick news flash --- Corrinne May tickets have been sold! Back to the juicy stuff. On Friday, courtesy of Kelvin and Alice, we headed up to Johor Bahru to play a round of 18 holes at the Ponderosa Golf and Country Club. I met them at their house at Phillips Ave just after 7am to travel in their car. The other instruction given ---- Do not eat breakfast. I did not dare argue. Kelvin is a Major in the Navy. I would not offend Alice either. She is one of the supervisors on the Takashimaya Department Store shop floor (Now you know where I get my free parking perks from? I am just kidding, but you knew that already). OK, back to Johor. We headed to Johor Bahru and within a few minutes of crossing the woodlands causeway, we arrived at the Ang Kim Chwee coffee shop at 149 Jalan Lumba Kuda. To see a picture of the shop front, click here. There are just a couple of stalls in the coffee shop. One sells Hainanese Beef Noodles and the other sells Duck. We ordered the beef noodles (as seen above) and my oh my! What a delicious treat! Tender beef slices (like when eating taiwanese beef noodles) and tripe in a black sauce. The best thing was the noodles, which is like our 'Chor Bee Hoon', except in Malaysia, it is smooth and slippery and chewy to the bite. The balck sauce was not thick and starchy like the ones in Singapore. All I can say was that it was a delight to the senses. Kelvin then ordered a plate of braised duck. Duck in the morning for breakfast? What the heck! I popped a piece into my mouth thinking that it was like any normal duck ----- It was NOT like any normal duck! The meat absolutely melted in my mouth and was just so unbelievably tender. To prevent further drooling onto the keyboard, I shall prematurely end my description of the food. Once again, a round up of the dishes I ate that day: Cathay Hainanese Beef Noodles, Ang Kim Chwee Coffee Shop, 149 Jalan Lumba Kuda (opp the new Customs and Immigration construction project) RM 5 for small bowl, RM 6 for Big Bowl ------ Die Die Must Eat! Braised Duck, same as above address. RM 8 for decent plate of braised duck ---- Die Die Must Eat! KL Hokkien Mee, 135A Jalan Keris, Taman Seri Terbau, Ranging from RM 5 to RM 10 for different noodle dishes. Also try the deep friend pork strips.
