Jeremy's Learning Disabilities Page
What is a learning disability?
LD is a disorder that affects people's ability to either interpret what
they see and hear or to link information from different parts of the brain.
These limitations can show up in many ways: as specific difficulties with
spoken and written language, coordination, self control, or attention.
Such difficulties extend to schoolwork and can impede learning to read,
write, or do math. For more general information on learning disabilities,
please visit LD In-General in our LD In-Depth section.[Source: National
Institutes of Health, 1993]
What are the types of learning disabilities?
LD is a broad term that covers a pool of possible causes, symptoms, treatments,
and outcomes. Because of this it is difficult to diagnose or to pinpoint
the causes. Learning Disabilities can be divided up into three broad categories.
These types of learning disabilities include:
Developmental speech and language disorders Academic skills disorders
" Other , " a catch-all that includes certain coordination disorders and
learning handicaps not covered by the other terms
Each one of these categories includes a number of more specific disorders.

What causes learning disabilities?
No one knows what causes learning disabilities as of now. There are too
many possibilities to pin down the cause of the disability with certainty.
A leading theory among scientists is that learning disabilities stem from
subtle disturbances in the brain structures and functions. It is more important,
however, that families not dwell on the causes but rather move forward
in finding ways to get the right help. For a list of national and state
resources please explore our page Where to Find Help.

What I think!!!!!!
I don't understand why people look down on LD. I was also a gifted student
in school. Basically throughout school, my teachers did not understand
me . They listen to me in class and thought I was super smart then
they see my test and not understand it. Then the teachers who did understand
it tried to hide it. Personally I am very proud of who and what I am. My
mom told me this and I really take it to heart. I mite not get there as
soon as everybody else but I will get there. Basically its the story about
the rabbit and the turtle. Not everyone will be a rabbit and not everyone
wants to be. I think that school system should realise this. I mean
my school system could care less. They figure they just put LD students
in special classes and that is the end of it. They have to learn that its
not that we need a special class all the time. We just mite need a extended
testing or a reader for test. Also I do not think any teacher in my school
thought I go to college except one. This has to change. Some LD children
mite need to go to a community college or a special college. These students
can do just as well in college as most other students. Our teachers must
realise this and tell each LD student this. If it was not for my mom I
do not think I would have ever wanted to go to college. Teachers must treat
there LD students with the same outlook as there "normal" students. This
is my option.
