This page is about some STREETLIGHTING in BOURNEMOUTH in DORSET . BOURNEMOUTH is on the south coast of ENGLAND.

1979

Most of the main road STREETLIGHTS were side entry GEC 8426 lanterns ( SON BULBS , less gear , semi cut of bowls ) , some THORN ALPHA 3 lanterns ( SON bulbs , semi cut of bowls ) , some GEC Z8128 lanterns , some GEC Z8430CM lanterns and some UNKNOWN lanterns . All the posts are metal and they were painted dark green .

While most of the side roads were top entry GEC Z5580/1/2B lanterns ( GLS BULBS ) on swan neck brackets with REVO 5M WOOLWICH posts , some cast iron posts with control gear boxes at the top of the post with swan neck brackets , there were some old gas streetlights in the CENTRAL GARDENS , some post top THORN GAMMA 2 lanterns ( 2ft FLUORESCENT TUBES ) , post top REVO EASTBOURNE lanterns ( MBF BULBS ) with WOOLWICH posts near the sea front ( WEST CLIFF PROMENADE , EAST CLIFF PROMENADE , EAST OVERCLIFF DRIVE ) , all the side road lights were painted 2 types of green . The base was painted dark green while the rest of it was painted light green . All these lights were control by timeswitches.

When the old posts needs changing with a new post , the council used modern posts with bolt on side entry brackets . The new lanterns were side entry PHOSCO P236 lanterns (less gear , MBF bulbs., timeswitches).

 

This is a top entry GEC Z5580/1/2B lantern ( GLS BULBS ,TIMESWITCH) on swan neck bracket on a REVO 5M WOOLWICH post . This photo was taken in 1999 along WESTBOURNE CLOSE . I been along this road during EASTER 2001 and this lantern is still on this post. Not many of these about in BOURNEMOUTH now.

UPDATED JUNE 2002 - All the old lanterns have been changed to the side entry CU PHOSCO P567 lanterns ( SONT BULBS , NEMA PHOTOCELLS ) .

 

This is a 5M modern post with a Bolt on bracket with a CU PHOSCO P236 lantern ( LESS GEAR , MBF BULB,TIMESWITCH) . This post was put in the late 70s and this post got a new integral gear CU PHOSCO P236 lantern which was installed in the 90s ( SON BULB , NEMA SOCKET PHOTOCELL) . This photo was taken in 1999 near WESTBOURNE CLOSE .

1980

The council has started painting all the Main road lights to white/grey colour .

 On one side of the PIER ( Poole side) ( WEST PROMENADE ) the lighting was 5M cast iron posts ( made by REVO ) with globe lanterns on them . The posts were painted white . This year the COUNCIL has changed them with new posts and lanterns . The posts were CU 5M concrete posts with post top PHOSCO P350 lanterns . In the 90s the council changed these with new 5M ALUMINIUM POSTS with new post top D.W.WINDSOR SALISBURY LANTERNS WITH SONT BULBS with modern optics ( DIAMOND OPTIC reflector ) .

  On the other side of the PIER ( BOSCOMBE side) ( UNDERCLIFF DRIVE ) the lighting is 8M cast iron posts with big post top REVO FESTIVAL lanterns ( four 5ft 80W FLUORESCENT tubes ) . These posts were painted white with dark grey bases . In the early 80s all the lanterns have been changed to post top PHOSCO P355 CHELSEA lanterns with SON BULBS .

In the early 90s all the lanterns have been changed to post top HERITAGE URBIS ALBANY LANTERNS ( painted green ) with SONT BULBS with MINIATURE PHOTOCELLS and modern optics in the lanterns . The lanterns are painted green and 1 post is painted green . While the rest of them are white and dark grey bases .

All the old lanterns on the old 8m cast iron posts ( same posts as in UNDERCLIFF DRIVE ) in LOWER CENTRAL GARDENS were replaced with new post top PHOSCO P355 CHELSEA lanterns with SON BULBS .

Along the WESTOVER ROAD , the lights were on TRAM BUS poles and the council changed them with all with new posts and lanterns in 1980 . The posts were new type 10 M BRITISH STEEL metal posts with the new type of side entry brackets . The new lanterns were side entry THORN ALPHA 3 lanterns ( INTEGRAL GEAR ) , semi cut of bowls , SON BULBS and with NEMA socket PHOTOCELLS . The posts were painted white .

Along these 3 roads ( WEST CLIFF ROAD , BRANKSOME WOOD ROAD , QUEENS ROAD ) most of the posts and lanterns were replaced with new 10 M BRITISH STEEL metal posts with the new type of side entry brackets . The new lanterns were side entry THORN ALPHA 3 lanterns ( LESS GEAR ) , semi cut of bowls , SON BULBS and with 2 PART PHOTOCELLS ( RTE P42 ) . The posts were painted white.

At the junction of WEST CLIFF ROAD and DURLEY ROAD the council put in a big new roundabout. The new posts are new 10 M BRITISH STEEL metal posts with the new type of side entry brackets . The new lanterns were the new side entry THORN ALPHA 8 lanterns ( INTEGRAL GEAR , SONE BULBS , semi cut of bowls , NEMA socket PHOTOCELLS ) which THORN brought out this year .

In these new THORN ALPHA 8 lanterns these were made of all metal and in 1981-1982 THORN changed it to a PLASTIC and METAL type of lantern . In 1986 THORN changed the ALPHA 8 lantern to a all PLASTIC lantern .

 

This is a post top CU PHOSCO P170 CHINE lantern.

1982 -1986

The Council started changing most of the side road lights with new post top lanterns and painted the posts with the new colour green . Most of the swan neck brackets were taken down and replaced with new straight bits of post which the new lanterns which were fitted to . The new post top lanterns were CU PHOSCO P170 CHINE ( less GEAR ) with SON bulbs , NEMA socket PHOTOCELLS or 2 PART PHOTOCELLS ( RTE P42 ) .

Along GROSVENOR ROAD the posts were cast iron posts with control gear boxes at the top of the post with swan neck brackets . The Council took down the swan neck brackets with the old control gear boxes from the posts and were replaced with new control gear boxes with new straight bits of post which the new lanterns which were fitted to . The lanterns are post top ELECO ( DAVIS ) PT1004 lanterns ( less gear ) in with SON BULBS and NEMA socket PHOTOCELLS .

Along CLARENDON ROAD just the lanterns were replaced with side entry GEC ( WRTL ) Z8832/70 lanterns with SON bulbs .

 1984-1985

The B.I.C. centre was finish and the path that goes pass it ( WEST CLIFF PROMENADE ) got new lights . These are 5 M BRITISH STEEL metal posts with with post top PHILIPS LAMPADA lanterns ( integral gear ) with SON bulbs .

When the new road ( ST PAUL'S ROAD ) was built the Council used 10M posts with GEC Z8526 lanterns ( LESS GEAR ) SEMI CUT OF BOWLS , SON BULBS and RTE P42 PHOTOCELLS .

1986

Around this year all the gas lights in the CENTRAL GARDENS, were replaced with new post top electric lights.The new posts were 5 M BRITISH STEEL metal posts with with post top CU PHOSCO P170 CHINE ( less GEAR ) with SON bulbs, and NEMA socket PHOTOCELLS .

In LOWER CENTRAL GARDENS the council put in a lot of new 5m HERITAGE posts with HERITAGE lanterns.The posts are D.W.WINDSOR CHESTER POSTS with D.W.WINDSOR YORK SHORT PLAIN LANTERNS WITH SON BULBS . All the post were painted green.

1986-1987

Along the bypass ( WESSEX WAY ) most of the posts and the lanterns were replaced with New CU PHOSCO 10M TAPERED metal posts with the new type of THORN ALPHA 8 lanterns , SONT BULBS , NEMA PHOTOCELLS . Some of the old posts were put in LOWER CENTRAL GARDENS with post top PHOSCO P355 CHELSEA lanterns with SON BULBS . These posts are now at 8m instead of 10m and the old brackets were not used again and these were about 2m high .

Along the ST PETER WALK , OLD CHRISTCHURCH ROADS , the lighting was by side entry GEC 8426 lanterns ( SON BULBS , less gear , semi cut of bowls ) on 10M posts and these were taken out and new CU PHOSCO FL345 SPACE FLOOD LIGHTS were mounted on the walls of the buildings to light these roads . Along the these roads they put in some SUGG HERITAGE 4M ROYAL EXCHANGE POSTS with 16 inch CLASSIC GLOBES LANTERNS (MBF BULBS) .

On the corner of ST PETER WALK and HINTON ROAD the Council put in a SUGG HERITAGE 4M ROYAL EXCHANGE POST with 3 HERITAGE 16 inch SUGG WINDSOR gas LANTERNS ( SQUARE LANTERNS ) on this post .

1989

The COUNCIL is now using the side entry PHOSCO P236 lanterns ( integral gear ) with SON BULBS and NEMA PHOTOCELLS . The COUNCIL have stopped using the less gear version of the P236 lantern .

 1993

  The council has started on some of the main roads ( EXETER ROAD ) changing the THORN ALPHA 8 lanterns with the new type of PHILIPS TRAFFIC VISION lanterns which PHILIPS brought out this year . The COUNCIL took the brackets away on the 10M posts and the new lanterns were mounted on the top of the posts ( post top ) .

These lanterns have got INTEGRAL GEAR , SONT BULBS , NEMA PHOTOCELLS and the OPTIC reflector setting can be adjusted in them .

 

1995

All the new main road lights are being painted with the new dark green colour paint and the side road lights.

 EXETER CRESCENT car park have been lit with 10M BRITISH STEEL POSTS with side entry brackes . The lanterns are side entry URBIS ZX2 LANTERNS with the black top with deep bowls . These have got SONT BULBS with NEMA SOCKET PHOTOCELLS.

 CENTRAL GARDENS some new 5M HERITAGE lights were put in near the stream and along some of the paths in CENTRAL GARDENS have got new modern metal posts with post top URBIS SINTRA lanterns . These got Refractor Bowls on them , black tops , SONT BULBS and NEMA SOCKET PHOTOCELLS .

 

1997-1998

The lights along the road ( next to WINTER GARDENS , EXETER ROAD) are 5M cast iron posts ( made by REVO ) with post top THORN GAMMA 2 ( 2ft FLUORESCENT tubes ) lanterns on them . The posts were painted light green with a dark green base . The lanterns have been changed with new ones. The new lanterns are post top WRTL 2015 lanterns , SONT BULBS , MINIATURE PHOTOCELLS and the posts are repainted dark green .

The council started using the new CU PHOSCO P567 lantern ( SONT BULBS , NEMA PHOTOCELLS ) instead of the CU PHOSCO P236 lantern ( integral gear ) . This new lantern can be post top or side entry mounted on to the post and is uses SONT BULBS .

EAST OVERCLIFF DRIVE old lanterns were replaced with post top WRTL 2015 lanterns , SONT BULBS and MINIATURE PHOTOCELLS .

SEAMOOR ROAD , ARCADE ROAD and WESTBOURNE ARCADE ROAD has got new 10M posts and lanterns . The posts are Tapered metal posts with side entry D.W.WINDSOR lanterns , SONT BULBS , DIAMOND OPTIC reflectors and MINIATURE PHOTOCELLS .

1998-2000

THE SQUARE is being redone with new lights etc and it is close to the traffic.The new lights are URBIS 10M Tapered POSTS with top entry HERITAGE URBIS ALBANY LANTERNS . These lanterns have got modern optics with SONT BULBS and the lanterns are painted green .

Some of the 8M lights in LOWER CENTRAL GARDENS have been changed to URBIS DIRECTALITE LANTERNS . These lanterns direct the light to the top reflector in the top of the lantern ,then the reflector reflects the light down wards towards the ground .

Along some roads there are some PHILIPS SGS203 lanterns ( MAIN ROADS , SIDE ROADS ) , WRTL GR70 lanterns ( SIDE ROADS ) and some CU PHOSCO P678 lanterns ( MAIN ROADS ) .

 

2000

There are still some top entry GEC Z5580/1/2B lanterns ( GLS BULBS ) on swan neck brackets with REVO 5M WOOLWICH posts with timeswitches along some roads ( WESTBOURNE CLOSE ) and some posts with the 2 colour green paint on them.

JUNE 2002 ----

This web page has been updated with some new information.

I found a lot of roads with cast iron posts with top entry GEC Z5580/1/2B lanterns ( SON BULBS , photocells) on swan neck brackets along BEAULIEU ROAD , BUMABY ROAD , EARLE ROAD , STUDLAND ROAD and CROSBY ROAD .

ALUM HURST carpark got new lights . The old lights were 10M metal posts with GEC 8426 lanterns ( less gear , RTE P42 photocells , SON bulbs , semi cut of bowls ) and the new lights are 10M CU PHOSCO metal posts with post top CU PHOSCO P678 lanterns ( integral gear , SONT bulbs , blanking NEMA socket photocells ) with blanking photocells they just link out the NEMA sockets and in these photocells is just some wire links and these photocells are black in colour .

In the carpark there is a new metal control box with a 4M metal post next to it , with a aerial on the top of it and the post was painted green . This control box controls ? these new carpark lights and they are radio-monitored from a remote spot and these lights can also been controlled from a remote spot .

 

AUG 2003

 Along a part of WESSEX WAY some of the old lanterns ( THORN ALPHA 8 lanterns ) were changed to THORN TRIUMPH 2 lanterns ( SONT BULBS ? , integral gear , painted green ) and these have got ROYCE THOMPSON LTD ( RT ) OASIS 200 RF Radio Frequency Module photocells . These photocells could got NEMA sockets on them or been wired into the lanterns and they got aerials on the top of these photocells . These lanterns are radio-monitored from a remote spot and these lights can also been controlled from a remote spot .

 

  WEST CLIFF PROMENADE ( next to the B.I.C centre near the sea front ) all the post top PHILIPS LAMPADA lanterns has been changed to post top URBIS K-LUX lanterns ( painted blue , integral gear , SONT bulbs , miniature 1 part photocells ) .

UPPER GARDENS ( near SURREY ROAD ) paths has got more new street lights . The posts are 5M CU PHOSCO metal posts with post top URBIS K-LUX lanterns ( painted green , integral gear , MH bulbs , miniature 1 part photocells ) .
