Founded in 1921, Phi Alpha Theta has, as its primary purpose, the recognition of exemplary work by college and university history majors. Membership in Phi Alpha Theta should be listed among other academic honors when applying to graduate or professional schools or when applying for employment in a history-related field. Zeta Eta, the LSU chapter was founded in 1956.

To qualify for membership according to the criteria established by the national council, undergraduate students must meet certain conditions.



Qualifications for Membership
  • must have completed at least twelve semester hours in history
  • GPA of 3.1 or better in all history courses
  • overall GPA of 3.0 or better
  • rank in the upper 35% of class
  • one time fee of $40 for lifetime membership

  • Participate in the selection of the Roselyn Boneno Prize for Distinguished Undergraduate Teaching in the Department of History
  • Participate in community outreach programs such as National History Day
  • Gain a greater understanding of what historians do
