Instructions current as of 10/10/06.
Instructions based on a clean install of FreeSpace 2 updated to 1.2.
No, I will not host the original FreeSpace 2 files. Check the link to the installer for some ideas on where to get them.
MAKE SURE YOU'VE DONE THE FOLLOWING:
USING THE FREESPACE OPEN INSTALLER:
1. Downloaded and ran the latest FreeSpace Open Installer.
2. Ran Start>All Programs>Games>FreeSpace 2>FreeSpace Open Launcher 5.4
3. Cutomized features on the "Features" tab and nowhere else.
4. Ran Start>All Programs>Games>FreeSpace 2>FreeSpace Open 3.6.9 - RC 7.8
5. Read the FAQ for the answer.
6. Searched HLP for the answer.
7. As a LAST resort, posted your problem on HLP.
I'd prefer that everyone use the installer, as it tends to cut down on the number of "HELP ME!" threads on HLP, but I'll keep the manual way up for those of you who want it. Be advised that it is not updated as often as the installer.
WITHOUT THE INSTALLER:
1. Extracted all files from rc7dot8.rar into your original FreeSpace 2 folder.
2. Extracted all files from mv_zpack.zip, mp-710_effects.rar, and mp-710_models.rar into a new folder called Media_VPs inside your FreeSpace 2 folder (if you think your computer can handle the higher-end visual effects, extract mv_adveffects.zip and mp-710_adveffects.rar into this folder as well.)
3. Downloaded and installed OpenAL.
4. Ran launcher.exe and clicked the browse button at the top.
5. Navigated to your original FreeSpace 2 folder and selected fs2_open_3_6_9.exe .
6. Went to Video tab and selected OpenGL, NOT D3D! Customized all other settings as desired.
7. Went to the MOD tab and hit Select Mod.
8. Selected the Media_VPs folder and hit okay, then Apply, then the other okay.
9. Created a shortcut to fs2_open_3_6_9.exe and double-clicked on it to play FSO.

12. Searched HLP for the answer.
13. As a LAST resort, posted your problem on HLP.
