Another Addition to the Menagerie

Well, I got my wish with the weather.  The last two days have been unseasonably cool--temps in the high 60s, low 70s, and almost chilly at night.  It's been really nice compared to the ridiculously hot weather we've been having.  Now I can start cooking agin--I even made Orman Kebap for dinner last night, the first time I've cooked in about 2 months.

Well, Meaghan came home yesterday sobbing about how the kids and the guards were being mean to a starving puppy at the gates to our development.  Apparently the little boys were throwing rocks at the puppy and the guards were doing something to its neck, strangling it or something.  Meaghan told them all off (in English, no less, which of course they couldn't understand) and then came crying to the house about this poor puppy.  She convinced Ekrem to go out and look at it, just to see how pitiful the little thing was.  A few hours later, he disappeared for a little while while I was lying on the couch trying to nap.  I heard him come in the door and then he just stood by the couch for a little while.  I opened my eyes, but there was a pillow on top of the couch, so all I could see was his face.  Something told me that if I moved that pillow, I would find a puppy in his arms.  I moved the pillow and sure enough--there it was.  Looking as pitiful as anything I've ever seen.  The poor thing was so starved she didn't even have the energy to move.  She was so covered in dirt, we couldn't even tell what color she really was.  Those big, sad, brown eyes got to me, so I gave her a bath in my bathtub, using my own Aussie shampoo.  Poor thing, the water ran mud flecked with fleas.  She was so dirty!  And too exhausted and starved to even protest the situation.  While I was bathing the poor little thing, Ekrem ran down to the grocery store to try to find some puppy food.  He came back with some dry stuff for puppies, but I don't think this baby was even old enough to have been weaned from her mommy yet, so I mixed it with some milk and hot water to make it mushy enough for her to eat.  She ended up licking the liquid out of the dish and trying to gum the kibble a bit.  She looked so lost and forlorn, all wet and wrapped up in a towel, but she still managed to look up at us adoringly with those sad, big, brown eyes and almost looked grateful.  We stationed Meg as puppy-sitter and then made a quick run down to the vet's office down the street for some canned puppy food and worm medicine.  Now that she's bathed, and somewhat fed, Ekrem has decided to call her "Sari," Turkish for yellow (as in the color), due the the yellow streak that runs down her back.  She is a Kangal-mix with a cute little tail that curls up over her back.  She seems very grateful to have a home and something to eat, although at this point she's not eating much.  I wonder how the cats are going to react to the new addition?
