We Found a Midwife!
We had our meeting yesterday with the midwife and I was so surprised that she is younger than me--by quite a bit! Not that it really makes any difference what her age is, but I was still expecting someone a bit older--early 40s, really. Not so much! But she sounds well-qualified and was kind enough to explain how midwifery works in Germany, where she is from. We were also able to meet with her partner, who is a massage therapist and doula. All my worries that we all wouldn't be "right" together were put aside, as they made me feel very comfortable.
We had quite a bit of discussion about Meg's birth, how it started, what interventions were used, etc. I can't believe that I am still so angry over it, 13 years later! While I realize that mine is certainly not at the level of "horror story," apparently I still have some unresolved issues, especially related to that episiotomy without the benefit of some local anesthetic. My favorite psychologist (Hubby) and I will have some work to do before this baby is born so that I don't drag this negative energy into labor with me.
Another major topic of discussion was waterbirth. I mentioned having a very big jacuzzi tub and planning to use it for at least part of the labor. The midwife was very excited, as she has had some extra education in this area and is particularly fond of waterbirth.
This has really taken a load off of my mind. Even though it was a pretty sure thing already, just meeting them both and knowing that we are all on the same page and we are definitely going to work together has really eased my mind a lot. Now I feel like I can get down to the smaller details of furniture, baby things, baby names, etc.
Now we just have to see my OB/GYN tomorrow and explain the plan to her and make sure that she's willing to be our backup doc. If not, we can always go somewhere else. I'm sure she didn't think I'd really find a midwife, so now she has to think about this homebirth as a real possibility. ;-)
