Thoughts on Nursing in Public
While I generally sit at home and do pretty much nothing all day, I am also quite busy searching online for information and participating in parenting forums. I was reading some posts on a particular forum concerning women who nurse their babies in public. It seems that some people (mostly young and childless) have real issues with nursing in public. From what I've read, it seems that these people have more of a problem with breasts being used as functional organs than the idea that they might actually see a breast (gasp). On the other side of the fence, there are the militant lactivists who claim that breasts are not sexual organs, they are functional organs and should be treated as such. Hmmm . . . . let's explore, shall we?
Here's a big news flash--life is sexual. Life is sexually transmitted and we must have a sexual relationship to propagate the species. Anyone who says that breasts are not sexual organs has not stood in a plastic surgeon's office for more than five minutes and/or has not been subjected to mass media in the last 30 years. Breasts *are* sexual, no doubt about it. Breasts are frequent players in the game of sexual attraction. But breasts are also functional organs. They are mammary glands that produce milk to feed the infant that is conceived via the sexual act. Breast milk is the end product of that series that begins with a wink and a flirt, leads to a bedroom encounter, and then a birth.
Breasts are not the only organs doing double duty, other organs are both sexual and functional as well. The vagina is not only the route for physical sexual pleasure, but also the exit route for the baby that is conceived--its function. The penis is not used only for sexual pleasure, it is also needed for the act of urination. The skin is the largest sexual organ--it is definitely needed for sexual pleasure, but it is functional as well. All of our "sexual organs" are multi-purpose!
But what is the most important sexual organ? The brain! This is the organ which decides whether we are engaging in a sexual act or a functional act. Unfortunately, there are some people whose brains are wired to think of anything relative to sexual organs as sexual acts. These people need to get their minds out of the gutter and off of my breasts.
